Workplace harassment is any type of unwelcome action toward an employee that leads to difficulty in performing assigned tasks or causes the employee to feel he or she is working in a hostile environment. The harassment may be based on numerous factors which include; sex, race, gender, culture, etc;
Conduct must be unwelcome and offensive to the employee in order for it be recognized. The employee must have expressed his or her disapproval to the behavior, allowing the offending person to correct their workplace behavior. At the end the conduct must be of a nature that makes an impact on the ability of the employee to carry out duties in an efficient and responsible manner.
Some workplace harassment is more common than others such as sexual advances by other co-workers or supervisors. Both male and female employees may be approached by someone in the workplace who either hint or directly state that compliance will benefit the employee in some manner, or at least help to ensure that employment will continue. Harassment comes in all forms such has prejudice remarks and tasteless jokes, name calling, sexual orientation.
Harassment should never be tolerated in any work environment. When it does occur talk to a manager first. If it is the manager that is doing the harassing talk to someone in the Human Resources immediately.
